Amino acids and Human Growth Hormone production

Amino acids are in food make up the protein. When protein from the food or supplements we digested is broken down into precise amino acids, which are then selectively put together for diverse uses within the body. Amino acids have an effect on the function of organs, glands, tendons and arteries. They are also essential for many things such as; healing wounds and repairing tissues, especially in the muscles, bones as well as for the removal of all kinds of waste produced during metabolism.

L-Ornithine

L-Ornithine is a non-protein amino acid that is an intermediate of the urea cycle, and provision of ornithine to a cell is the rate limiting step of the cycle.

  • ...arginine and ornithine supplementation on serum growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor-1, Insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 3 (GH, IGF-1, IGFBP-3), testosterone, cortisol, and insulin levels. During 3-week resistance training, bodybuilders were randomly divided between L-Arginine / L-ornithine group and the placebo group. Fasting blood samples were collected at rest, 2 minutes after the cessation of the training, and after 1 hour of recovery. Both growth hormone and Insulin-like growth factor-1 serum levels were significantly increased (p < 0.05). There was no between-group difference in the remaining hormone levels.

As we can see in the above research ornithine and arginine, create a potent synergistic effect on the body’s ability to produce HGH. We have one last amino acid to review, glutamine.

L-Glutamine

L-glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the bloodstream, and it makes up 30-35% of the amino acid nitrogen in your blood. It’s known as a conditionally essential amino acid because your body uses it in large amounts.
