Today we go through some natural ingredients to help you on your track to losing weight. Many fat burners nowadays contain a lot of stimulants to increase metabolism, so we intend to investigate some no stimulant based fat-shedding ingredients.
GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) is an omega-6 fatty acid which helps burn fat, endorsing weight loss. It has evidence showing it is good for preventing weight gain after you’ve lost weight (“After one year, weight regain in the GLA group averaged 2 pounds, compared to nearly 9 pounds in the other group. The researchers concluded that GLA reduced the amount of weight regain following significant weight loss, according to their report published in the “Journal of Nutrition” in June 2007.” ("GLA & Weight Loss")), and helps to control appetite.
GLA increases your metabolism by using brown fat in the body burn calories for energy and to keep your body warm (if you want to learn more about this I highly recommend, “What Doesn’t Kill Us: How Freezing Water, Extreme Altitude and Environmental Conditioning Will Renew Our Lost Evolutionary Strength” by Scott Carney). Typically, brown fat is not as active in overweight people, and that’s where GLA becomes useful. This can help activate brown fat and burn off the “white” fat which accumulates under your skin all over your body. GLA is also a good appetite suppressant since it raises the levels of serotonin, so you feel full and need to eat less.
Like GLA, CLA is an omega-6 fatty acid. CLA is an umbrella term for numerous different types of trans-fats similar in chemical structure.
First off, one study, West et al. (1998), the result of CLA on body fat and energy metabolism in mice was scrutinised over six weeks. In this study, half of the mice were given a CLA while the other half did not receive any CLA. After six weeks the study revealed CLA significantly reduced energy intake, growth rate and body fat mass, independent of diet composition aka diet didn’t play a role in these results. These findings demonstrate that CLA increased the metabolic rate in mice, causing a reduction in body fat.
Secondly, another study revealed that CLA can decrease body fat mass in overweight people and may help to preserve initial weightless long-term. Along with this, the effect of CLA in healthy exercising individuals was also analysed by Wadstein et al. (2001) in a double-blind, randomised trial including healthy subjects with an average Body Mass Index and weight. The study established that CLA could not only reduce body fat mass in individuals who are overweight but can also actually reduce body fat in healthy exercising individuals, making it an excellent addition to many fitness routines and supplement stacks.
Inositol is nutrient your body makes it from glucose. Some regularly consumed foods can lead to lower inositol levels such as coffee, alcohol, water, and sulfa drugs. If you want to help restore your levels to assist in losing weight, foods that are rich in this substance include bananas, nuts, raisins, whole grains, beans, cantaloupe and peanuts. The liver is a highly good source of inositol. Inositol is also available in supplement form. Inositol works by improving the way the body responds to insulin in the body.
“Inositol plays an important part in the so-called insulin signalling pathway, and it has been shown to help with insulin resistance. Many people who have been diagnosed with insulin resistance have been found to be deficient in inositol” ("Inositol For Weight Loss - The Essentials")
L-carnitine transfers long-chain fatty acids, such as triglycerides into mitochondria, where they can be oxidised to produce energy. Carnitine has also been shown to reduce fatigue and also works as an appetite suppressant. Therefore, l-carnitine can be a major asset to have in your weight-loss arsenal. It can not only help keep your body from the process of storing energy as fat, but it will increase your aerobic capacity to help you burn more calories at the gym.
Carnitine can also be helpful in
- Athletic performance
- Cardiovascular and peripheral arterial disease
- Type 2 diabetes
